‘Spotted’: Imperial Airways played an important role in the upsurge in air transport after the First World War, enabling colonial traders and affluent travellers to voyage far and wide across the British Empire, then at its zenith. The spectacular beauty and exotic wildlife of southern and eastern Africa was the source of much European intrigue and adventure, with travellers dreaming of a scene, such as depicted here. The Empire’s scale was such that the sun never set on it; but here, it stunningly obliges. The sunset’s purple hue silhouettes Africa’s natural exotica, with a leopard broodingly glaring into the observer’s eye.
