Snow bound: The crown for the jewel of the French Alps must surely go to Chamonix, claiming matchless views of the majestic Mont Blanc. Two resourceful Englishmen discovered the Gallic climbing capital, situated on the French-Italian border, in the 18th century. Ascent in 1786 of the awesome Alpine peak - the true climber's prize - ushered in the age of mountaineering. Luxury hotels appeared as early as 1816, and the first Winter Olympics staged on the slopes of Chamonix in 1924. A 'champagne climate' and heady glamour has proved a magnet for worldclass skiers for generations.
