High life: Val d'Isère, former hunting station of the ducs de Savoie and located in the vast valley of the upper River Isère, offers abundant snow cover and extensive snowfields. The preferred resort of highaltitude skiers, with some 30 passes and summits to ensure plenty of choice for practitioners of cross-country. Evidence suggests that early mankind used a form of ski for hunting and, as early as the 15th century, 'ski troops' were raised in Scandinavia. Competitive skiing dates from the late 19th century, yet it was the introduction of ski lifts (téléphériques) that led to enormous growth in the sport, and principally 'Downhill'.
