A sunny place: Bruce McLaren, seen here in the background in his Cooper-Climax took pride of place on the podium in the 1962 Formula 1 race, where Phil Hill's 'shark-nose' Ferrari was runner up, and Lorenzo Bandini's car placed third. Hill was sold his first Ferrari by US concessionaire Luigi Chinetti at a knockdown price. "I look" said Chinetti, "for the spark in a man who could be tomorrow's world champion." Hill, the first American to win the World Championship, spoke good Italian and, during the race season, lived near Ferrari's test circuit at the Reale Hotel, Modena. Pictured in the background is the Hotel Miramar, now no more.
