Hotel superior: Winningly evocative image of the unique Badrutt's Palace Hotel, sited in Engadine's most fabled resort. The British were the first to experiment with winter sports and legend has it that Johannes Badrutt, savvy proprietor of the Külm Hotel, invited a party of British 'tourists' to winter in St. Moritz in 1864. Guests enjoyed the promised sunshine, skated on the lake, tobogganed down the village street and hiked across the country. The rest, as the cliché has it, is history. Badrutt's wondrously grand hotel opened in 1896.
