Island life: Settled by the British in 1627, Barbados gained its independence in 1966, but still retains a strong British flavour. This is most apparent with the island's national sport; cricket, which can be traced back to Tudor times in early 16th-century England. Best known for its white sandy beaches and calm water on the west coast, home to the iconic Sandy Lane hotel, a lesser known fact about this most easterly of the Caribbean islands is that it is one of the world's most densely populated nations, with more than 625 people per square kilometre. As well as singing sensation Rihanna, the grapefruit also originates from Barbados.
