Sailing in style: Cunard's RMS Queen Elizabeth, and her running mate Queen Mary, provided luxury liner service between Southampton and New York City via Cherbourg. With elegant Art Deco interiors, decorated by the world's most talented artists, these were two of the most beautiful ocean liners ever built. Queen Elizabeth was the largest passenger liner ever built at that time - and for fifty-six years thereafter. After having played an important part in the war effort, both ships dominated the transatlantic passenger trade until their fortunes began to decline with the advent of the faster and more economical jet airliners in the 1960s.
